The thin men are a "Men in Black" design in keeping more with classic conspiracy theory than the Will Smith vehicle, their slightly uncanny human appearance more Gumby-cum-Agent Smith. The enemy design is in keeping with all the sci-fi touchstones one would expect: the "Sectoids" look like the stereotypical big-eyed, ashy "grays" made famous by the Roswell accounts. The player orders aircraft to intercept UFOs and sends soldiers on missions to engage aliens on the ground. Between missions, XCOM's underground headquarters is displayed in "ant farm" fashion: here players must deploy construction teams, research projects, and manage resources while monitoring the "Geoscape," a holographic view of the Earth that tracks alien events around the world. The few cutscenes during map gameplay emphasize particularly exciting moments, usually critical kill sequences special ability moves. Though map layouts are not randomly generated, soldier and enemy placement is, and the addition of fog of war allows for enough variety and surprise that even well-trodden maps remain entertaining. The player, in the role of "The Commander," controls a squad of human or robotic soldiers with special abilities, tasked with hunting aliens and completing a variety of objectives on maps. Ground combat uses a top-down 3D perspective. The turn-based strategy element is tightly controlled and addicting. Its premise is simple: the world has been invaded by aliens that have the technology to genetically enhance certain of their characteristics to better decimate our planet. Upgrading Julian Gollop's cult hit strategy game UFO: Enemy Unknown, Firaxis Studio's XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) checks all the boxes for an excellent turn-based strategy gamer, especially 80s and 90s nostalgiacs raised on a healthy diet of Starcraft, Starship Troopers, and X-Files. High-level play would be super conservative and overwatch would be over-used - The conceal system isn't great.A little background for the uninitiated: XCOM is a science fiction game franchise featuring an elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasions of Earth.

will this take an action, can I attack here with out a reaction from a boss? This would suuuuuuck if you were playing iron man mode. Some things are not explained well, e.g. Outcomes weren't meaningful because you could just load from a turn ago. Chance of hitting/hacking etc is always given, so you have to judge whether it is a risk worth taking - Having the ability to play Ironman mode (no scum saving) - Characters could die and you play through if you don't scum save - The bosses are pretty cool: Serpant, Berserker, Flying guy, Chosen Cons: - Having the ability to scum save. You could start early with Psi-soldiers and get armor late, or vice-versa, etc. :) And my reaper - oh boy, that banish move~Ĩ0% PCStrategy tactics game Pros: - Good strategy elements with a cool world - Great class balance: Every class is fun in their own way, and a diverse team is best - Customization: Weapons, armor, equipment, and abilities are all customizable per soldier - World map options: You choose what to prioritize. My psi soldiers were just walking death machines. Best part is developing psi-powers and using the reaper's shadow movement. The cutscenes related to them just vanish after the first one is defeated, and never really come back there's never a mention of them again once you defeat the third one. The chosen storyline was cool up until you defeated the second chosen, and - I'm, like, pretty sure they never actually finished the story(?). As a narrative junky, the writing in this (and the previous reboot) is addictive but hammy- and dumb-as-hell, throwing meaningless word-vomit and drama at you endlessly.

The added factions and much-needed gameplay tweaks from WOTC contributed a lot to what kept me going. Somewhere around the halfway point on this final attempt, I found my soldiers suddenly surviving missions easily, and the addiction snowballed from there. Playing these last 4 years,I could only inch through the campaign - occasionally restarting - one mission at a time. Amazing game, but it's so easy to feel burnout just from the stress it induces, particularly early on. 90% PCOnly took me 4 years to finally finish XCOM 2 - waiting for War of the Chosen to come out before finishing it was a good call, I guess.
